College basketball uniforms are getting a “green” update from Nike. The new Hyper Elite uniforms, which were debuted by the Gonzaga Bulldogs on Jan. 19, feature lightweight materials made from recycled products.

Twelve teams will use the Hyper Elite uniforms for road games: North Carolina Tar Heels, Duke Blue Devils, Baylor Lady Bears, Villanova Wildcats, Georgetown Hoyas, Southern California Trojans, Ohio State Buckeyes, Kentucky Wildcats, Connecticut Huskies Women, Stanford Cardinal, Texas Longhorns and Gonzaga Bulldogs.

Nike’s new Hyper Elite uniforms are made of recycled polyester from plastic bottles. The jersey material is 96 percent recycled and the shorts are 100 percent recycled. Each uniform recycles the equivalent of 22 plastic water bottles.

The new uniforms still feature Dri-Fit fabric, which has been used in previous Nike apparel to keep athletes dry and comfortable. Also, the jerseys and shorts allow for more ventilation with Nike Aerographics construction.

Fans may not notice a big difference between the old and new college basketball uniforms, but athletes will feel a difference while wearing them. The uniforms are lighter and will keep them dry longer. In addition, the Hyper Elite college basketball uniforms should fit better, because they are less bulky than previous versions.
