In a Facebook Post, Braxton Miller Recalls the Day He Made Cubs OF Kyle Schwarber Quit Football
Chicago Cubs slugging outfiedler Kye Schwarber, who, as Jonah Keri so aptly put it, strongly resembles a fire hydrant, has been one helluva story through two games of the World Series. In the second game of the 2016 season, Schwarber tore his ACL in a collision with a teammate; and after undergoing surgery, he was assumed to be lost for the year. But Schwarber sped through his rehab and recovered in time to make the Cubs’ World Series roster, where all he’s done is go 3-for-7 with a double and two RBIs in the first two games of the Fall Classic.

If looking at Schwarber’s build makes you think, “wow, this dude could probably play football too,” you would not be wrong. He was an all-state middle linebacker at Middletown (Ohio) High School, where, in 2010, he was looking to finish his high school career by winning a state championship. Unfortunately, he ran into Braxton Miller.
Miller, who was the quarterback for the Huber Heights Wayne Warriors before heading off to Ohio State (and the NFL), faced off against Schwarber in the 2010 Ohio State playoffs. He passed for one touchdown and ran for another to lead the Warriors to a 21-0 win. It would be the last high school football game Schwarber would ever play.
On Thursday, Miller took to Facebook to joke that a play from that game in which Miller avoided Schwarber’s tackle was the moment Schwarber chose baseball.
Miller avoided many defenders at OSU before he was drafted by the Houston Texans this spring, so we can forgive Schwarber for whiffing on that tackle. Perhaps it was a blessing in disguise. Schwarber might be on his way to becoming a World Series legend.
