Iron Sharpens Iron: Tim Tebow Trains at D1-Savannah
“It’s not always about the workout. It’s about the work ethic,” says Tim Tebow. “When you have the work ethic, then you can find the right workout to fit your body and fit what you’re trying to accomplish.”
Before Tebow arrived at the D1 training facility in Savannah last Thursday, May 12, Kurt Hester, national director of training for D1, regaled STACK with the story of their first meeting at D1’s Nashville site. It was the first week of January 2010, and Tebow, the most decorated college football player in recent history, was searching for a training facility to prepare for the NFL Combine.
“I told him, ‘I don’t care if you’re here or if you’re not here,’” Hester says. “If you do come, you have 100 percent of my effort, 24/7. You can go to some other facility and lay on the beach, drink smoothies and get massages, but that’s not how we train. This is a blue-collar place. We’re going to work 12 hours a day.”
Hester continues: “‘If you come here, you can do it my way. If you don’t like doing it my way, we’ll go out on the field right now and we’ll fight. If you win, I’ll do it your way. [If] I win, you’re going to do it my way. But you’re going to be doing it my way.’”
Tebow’s response? “I said, ‘I’m going train there,’” he says. “Kurt brings juice everywhere he goes. He’s going to tell you how it is. He doesn’t care who you are; he doesn’t care about your feelings. During that first meeting, I knew, because he was blunt. He said ‘we’re going to work, we’re going to try and make you puke, and if you’re man enough, let’s go in and get after it.’”
Tebow welcomed the challenge, and the Heisman winner’s work ethic impressed Hester, who says their first meeting occurred just before midnight, after which they went straight to the weight room for a late night/early morning workout.
More than a year later, Tebow is making his debut appearance at D1-Savannah, the latest in a growing chain of D1 facilities across the country. The Denver Broncos quarterback, who recently became a D-1 co-owner, stopped in for a media appearance-slash-three-part training session that lasted nearly four hours.
After a nonstop metabolic conditioning circuit on the outdoor turf, Tebow and Hester hit up the weight room for a lower-body power session. The former Florida Gator charmed members of the local media before instructing youth and high school athletes in an on-field training session. Never one to pass up an opportunity to improve his performance, Tebow then joined the high school group for his second strength workout of the afternoon, this time working his upper body.
At 6:00 p.m., nearly three and a half hours after he stepped on the outdoor turf (and after and the crowd commotion had died down), Tebow was alone in the weight room performing Pull-Ups as Hester looked on with pride.
Work ethic exemplified.
