Is Steven Spielberg Planning a 'Jaws' Reboot?

Will Steven Spielberg sign on to direct a new installment of his classic movie 'Jaws'?

A long-awaited reboot of the iconic film Jaws may soon be in the works. Although there has been talk for years that Universal wanted to revive the killer shark franchise, a business deal is under discussion that could make it a reality. Steven Spielberg's DreamWorks will potentially merge with Universal when DreamWorks' current deal with Disney expires.

Whether Spielberg is willing to go back in the water 40 years after directing the original film remains unclear. But the studio seems to think it's within the realm of possibility. COMINGSOON.net quoted a remark from Universal: "[Spielberg] also is key on potential reboots of other Universal franchises such as Jaws and Back to the Future."

As for a Back to the Future reboot, at least one filmmaker is adamantly against it. The original franchise director, Robert Zemeckis, told The Telegraph just a few months ago: "That can't happen until both Bob [Gale] and I are dead, and then I'm sure they'll do it, unless there's a way our estates can stop it."

Jaws spawned three sequels, the last of which was released in 1987, but Spielberg directed none 0f them. Although two were commercially successful, the bar was set so high after the original film that the sequels did not live up to the public's expectations.

Spielberg already has a full slate of high-profile projects on the horizon, including reboots of several other popular film franchises, including Indiana Jones, Gremlins and Jurassic World. His next picture is the Tom Hanks Cold War thriller Bridge of Spies, out Oct. 16.
