J.J. Abrams On-Board for Star Wars. What’s Next?
J.J. Abrams, co-creator of the Lost, Fringe and Alias TV series and director of the Star Trek movie reboots, has been tapped to direct Star Wars Episode 7 . So what are the next steps for the blockbuster?
Michael Arndt, screenwriter for Little Miss Sunshine, is writing the screenplay for Episode 7. George Lucas, who sold Lucasfilm and the rights to Star Wars to Disney for $4.05 billion last year, originally wrote outlines for 12 episodes in the series. Lucas’s biographer, who has read those outlines, said that the story outlines for Episodes 7, 8 and 9 are the most exciting of the epic film series. The stories reportedly involve Luke Skywalker in his 30s and 40s.
Abrams’ current project, Star Trek Into Darkness, still in post-production, will land in theaters May 18. Once Star Trek is complete, Abrams will need to jump over to Star Wars pretty quickly, since Disney has Episode 7 slated to open in 2015.
