Jacksonville Jaguars WR Allen Hurns Battles Grass Allergy as Well as Opponents
Last week, NFL wide receiver Allen Hurns signed a four-year, $40 million contract extension with the Jacksonville Jaguars. The 24-year-old signee is making strides in the league. Last season he tallied more than 1,000 receiving yards and scored 10 touchdowns. And according to ESPN, Hurns achieved all this while battling an allergy to grass, the surface that the Jaguars practice and play on.
Hurns says the allergy sometimes causes a rash to erupt on his neck, legs and arms after practices and games. Grass allergies can also cause breathing difficulties, headaches, itchy or watery eyes, and sneezing or other respiratory issues. For most people, the allergy is just a nuisance. But merely being outside near freshly cut grass can cause symptoms to flare up, so imagine how uncomfortable Hurns must be when he experiences them when he’s running and getting tackled on the field.
Hurns told ESPN that the allergy “has its moments,” but he doesn’t experience breathing problems or a stuffy or runny nose. He says he sometimes take Benadryl after practice or games if he’s having a severe breakout. Hurns wears long sleeves and tights to help prevent breakouts in the first place. He also says that staying hydrated helps him avoid allergy symptoms.
