Jai Courtney Will Star in Wartime Drama ‘The Kaiser’s Last Kiss’
Australian actor Jai Courtney (Divergent franchise) has boarded the World War II era thriller The Kaiser’s Last Kiss, joining a cast that includes Lily James (Wrath of the Titans) and Oscar winner Christopher Plummer (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo).
The film is based on Alan Judd’s novel, which tells a story of international intrigue and passion amid the 1940 Nazi invasion of Holland, during which German soldiers were brought face to face with their deposed monarch, Kaiser Wilhelm (Christopher Plummer), who was exiled to the Netherlands in 1917.
The story centers on an investigation led by a German soldier (Courtney) to determine whether the Dutch resistance, which is covertly working with Winston Churchill, has planted a spy in the home of Kaiser Wilhelm. Things become complicated when the soldier falls for a young Jewish woman (James) in the midst of the investigation. Not only is the love affair forbidden, it is extremely dangerous under the circumstances. As the Nazis attempt to identify and eliminate the agent, the political views of Courtney’s character begin to shift and he becomes disillusioned with Nazism.
This movie will mark the film directorial debut of David Leveaux, best known for directing stage productions of classic plays like Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. The screenplay was written by Simon Burke (Persuasion).
A release date for The Kaiser’s Last Kiss has not yet been announced. Courtney has two high-profile films debuting between now and the end of next year, including the star-studded comic book adaptation Suicide Squad and the sci-fi thriller Man Down, co-starring Shia LaBeouf and Kate Mara.
