James Cameron, Robert Rodriguez Gear Up for ‘Battle Angel Alita’
James Cameron will produce a live-action feature film adaptation of the manga comic Battle Angel Alita, and filmmaker Robert Rodriguez (Spy Kids; Sin City) is negotiating to direct. Cameron has been struggling to bring this film to the big screen for 15 years. An action-adventure movie focused on self-discovery and a search for love, it tells the story of a female cyborg who has no memory of her past when she is discovered in a trash yard by a scientist. The only thing she remembers from her previous life is her lethal martial arts training. She goes on to become a bounty hunter, searching for criminals.
“Robert and I have been looking for a film to do together for years, so I was pumped when he said he wanted to do Battle Angel, said Cameron. “He’s very collaborative, and we’re already like two kids building a go-kart, just having fun riffing creatively and technically. We’re looking forward to learning a lot from each other while we make a kick-ass epic.”
Rodriguez expressed similar enthusiasm for the project, saying, “Battle Angel is an incredibly rich and vibrant epic in the tradition of Jim Cameron’s spectacular, character-driven films.”
The screenplay is being written by Laeta Kalogridis, known for co-writing the 2010 Leonardo DiCaprio mystery thriller Shutter Island.
