John Cusack stars as legendary Beach Boys singer/songwriter Brian Wilson in the big screen biopic Love & Mercy. The film follows the amazingly talented Wilson from his success in pop music to his nervous breakdown, which led to his becoming a longtime recluse. In addition to exploring his phenomenal career, the movie delves into the mysterious period in Wilson’s life when he retreated from the world while under the care of controversial therapist Dr. Eugene Landy.
The young Wilson is portrayed by Paul Dano, who was most recently seen in 12 Years a Slave. Paul Giamatti plays Dr. Landy. The actors cast as Wilson’s brothers/bandmates are Kenny Wormald (Center Stage: Turn It Up) as Dennis, and Brett Davern (Awkward) as Carl. Beach Boy Mike Love is played by Jake Abel (I Am Number Four). Erin Darke, best known for the feature film Draft Day, plays singer Marilyn Wilson, who was Brian Wilson’s first wife. His second wife, Melinda Ledbetter, is played by Elizabeth Banks. Cast as infamous record producer Phil Spector is Jonathan Slavin (Robot and Monster).
Producing and directing the film is Bill Pohlad, best known for producing Wild and 12 Years a Slave. The screenplay was written by Oren Moverman (The Quiet Ones) and Michael A. Lerner.
Love & Mercy will hit theaters nationwide June 5, 2015.
