ABC Has Plans for Marvel Mystery Series
Marvel is developing another series for ABC. Described as a mystery, it will be produced by the Oscar-winning John Ridley, best known for Twelve Years a Slave. Ridley has an overall contract with ABC, and he’s also behind the network’s new drama American Crime. Although the show has not been a big hit in terms of ratings, ABC’s executives are still excited to work with Ridley.
Little information has surfaced about the upcoming mystery series, but it will reportedly feature the reinvention of an existing superhero character or property. It joins several other Marvel projects at the network. In addition to Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Agent Carter, an Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. spinoff series is being developed. Interestingly, there has been speculation that this Ridley series might be the S.H.I.E.L.D spinoff, but that seems unlikely, since Ridley’s name was not mentioned when the story about the spinoff originally broke. One thing is clear: ABC is determined to get a piece of the comic book TV series action.
Ridley’s next project is an ambitious big screen epic, a remake of Ben-Hur, which he wrote and produced. Television is familiar territory for Ridley. He has worked in TV on and off for 20 years on such prominent titles as The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and Third Watch. Said to be a genuine comic book fan, he also penned an episode of the animated Justice League show.
