The plot follows Mortdecai's efforts to recover a stolen painting that may contain the code to a lost bank account full of Nazi gold. Contending with angry Russians, an international terrorist and British MI5, Mortdecai has his hands full as he races around the world on a mission to retrieve the valuable work of art.

The film also features Paul Bettany (Iron Man 3), Oliver Platt of TV's Fargo, and veteran actor Jeff Goldblum.
Directing this picture is David Koepp, who worked with Depp 10 years ago as writer/director of the suspense thriller Secret Window. As he did for most of his other projects, Koepp also wrote the screenplay for Mortdecai—in collaboration with Eric Aronson (On the Line) and Peter Baynham (Hotel Transylvania).
Depp recently praised the comedic crime trilogy, telling an interviewer from Popsugar, "It's a very funny series of books and a very interesting character."
