Rap News Rundown: JT, Chris Brown, MTV’s ‘Hottest MCs’ List
In this past week’s rundown, singer Justin Timberlake responded to Kanye West’s unkind words about his new single; Chris Brown reverted to his not-so-old ways; and MTV’s annual “Hottest MCs” list left many feeling shafted.
Justin Timberlake Disses Kanye West
During a performance on Saturday Night Live, Justin Timberlake responded to Kanye West’s diss about his single “Suit & Tie.” On stage with rapper Jay-Z, the singer switched up a line in his second verse from “And aw, s**t so sick, got a hit and picked up a habit” to “My hit’s so sick, got rappers acting dramatic.”
Neither Hov nor Justin has responded to West’s rant in any other fashion. The two are slated to go on an 11-stop stadium tour dubbed Legends of the Summer.
Chris Brown Unravels, Disses Drake
Chris Brown’s anger once again got the better of him last week. Brown attended a charity function Wednesday night (March 6) and flipped out on the valet attendant over a $10 service charge. He felt the price was ridiculous considering he only spent 30 minutes inside the venue and that he was being singled out because he was a celebrity.
He followed up that incident with a stop at Emerson Theatre in Hollywood. When the DJ started to play a Drake single, the crooner jumped on stage to say, “F*** Drake,” and went into an impromptu mini-concert that included advice to other male attendees on how to handle their women. Hopefully the irony was not lost on those in the audience, as the Virginia-bred singer told them to lay claim to their women’s lady parts so that the women won’t stray. The rant was undoubtedly in response to Drake’s new song “5 AM in Toronto,” in which the Young Money star raps, “Where you think she at when she ain’t with you?”
Rappers React to MTV’s ‘Hottest MCs’ List
MTV’s annual list of the rap game’s hottest acts is always controversial. This year was no different as several rappers took issue with their spots on the list. Kanye West, ranked number seven, vented about the low post during an interview with Hot 97, accusing the judges of focusing more on his personal life than his actual contributions to the game. Drake seemingly took aim at his No. 5 spot on “5am in Toronto”. And Soulja Boy, who hasn’t been a factor in mainstream radio in quite awhile, called the list “bull****” on Twitter.
Not everyone reacted negatively. Kendrick Lamar and 2 Chainz, number one and two respectively thanked MTV for their spots. Even Big Sean, this year’s No. 6, thanked the site, promising he would improve with the release of his sophomore album.
