Earlier this month, news broke that Justin Timberlake might be returning to his musical roots after a six-year hiatus. First, Timberlake used a cryptic tweet to hint at a possible return. Later, he confirmed his comeback through a short video recording, in which he stated, "I don't want to put anything out that I feel like is something I don't love. You just don't get that every day. You have to wait for it. I'm ready."
Sunday night he released his first single,"Suit & Tie," featuring rapper Jay-Z. The song is retro-inspired hip-hop tinged with a laid back party rhythm. It calls to mind Robin Thicke at first listen, and may even remind listeners of a smoother R. Kelly, Maxwell groove.
In an open letter to fans on his official website, Timberlake wrote about the inspiration behind his upcoming third studio album, The 20/20 Experience. After revealing that he started working on the project last summer, he said, "The inspiration for this really came out of the blue, and to be honest, I didn't expect anything out of it. I went into the studio and started playing around with some sounds and songs. It was probably the best time I've had in my career . . . just creating with no rules and/or end goal in mind and really enjoying the process."
The 20/20 Experience will be produced by Timbaland, as was its predecessor, FutureSex/LoveSongs, in 2006.
"Suit & Tie" is available for download on iTunes.
