‘Time’ Lists Kanye West Among Top 100 Influential People
Kanye West is featured in Time’s top 100 list of the most influential people of 2015. The magazine separated the list into five categories: Titans, Pioneers, Artists, Leaders and Icons. West, who appears on one of the five covers released for the issue, is listed at the top of the Titan section. His profile was done by none other than Silicon Valley wunderkind Elon Musk.
“Kanye West would be the first person to tell you he belongs on this list,” writes Musk. “The dude doesn’t believe in false modesty, and he shouldn’t. Kanye’s belief in himself and his incredible tenacity—he performed his first single with his jaw wired shut—got him to where he is today. And he fought for his place in the cultural pantheon with a purpose.”
During a video interview with Time, the rapper reflected on his place in culture and questioned the importance of the living “in the now” vs. the future. “I don’t care about having a legacy, I don’t care about being remembered,” said West. “The most important thing to me is while I’m here, while we’re having fun, while we’re going to sleep and breathing oxygen, and living life, and falling in love, and having pain, and having joy, is like, ‘What can I do with my voice, what can we do for each other to make life easier, make life doper for our kids as they grow up?’ You know, they were born into a broken world and we’re like the clean-up crew.”
Others celebrities in the list include actors Bradley Cooper, Chris Pratt, Julianne Moore and Emma Watson, and comedians Amy Schumer and Kevin Hart.
