Can Kevin Durant Make Sonic Drive-In Serve Healthier Food?
On Thursday morning, Kevin Durant announced his latest endorsement deal—with fast-food chain restaurant Sonic Drive-in. For Sonic, which is based in Oklahoma City, KD will be the company’s first celebrity brand ambassador.
It’s clear from Durant’s Instagram that the OKC Thunder star plans to help Sonic create some healthier menu options. Sonic recently opened a test kitchen for new dishes. “They’ve been training, and I think they’re ready for me,” wrote Durant in the post.
Durant’s other endorsements include Skullcandy headphones, 2K Sports, and Neff, a headwear brand debuting an underwear collection next year, reports ESPN. And don’t forget his recent $300 million, 10-year deal with Nike.
Durant’s deals definitely lean towards the healthier end of the food/drink spectrum. He has become a spokesman for fruit and nut KIND bars, Sparkling Ice, Panini, the Oklahoma Department of Health, and Orange Leaf, a low-fat yogurt brand based in Oklahoma City.
Durant already has his own restaurant in OKC—KD’s Bricktown—specializing in southern cuisine. The menu might offer some clues about the approach Durant will take with the items he recommends for Sonic. According to NewsOK, chicken wings used to be a vice for KD, but he has since employed personal chef Ryan Lopez to help him curb his cravings.
Like most athletes, Durant prioritizes protein. As he told SI’s “Fridge Raider” recently, “I’m aware of my body, and what I eat has been a big part . . . to give me energy and help me recover from my workouts faster.”
