View With Your Crew: ‘Kick-Ass 2’
High school superhero Kick-Ass returns to the big screen Aug. 16 in a follow-up to the hugely popular 2010 action-comedy. In Kick-Ass 2, regular citizens are persuaded to don costumes and fight crime alongside Kick-Ass (Aaron Taylor-Johnson). The Red Mist, reborn as a new character, plans to avenge his father’s death, concocting a plot that will have an impact on everyone Kick-Ass knows.
Other interesting developments include the retirement of Hit-Girl, who wants to have a normal life, and the addition of Brooke, the leader of a gang of school bullies, portrayed by Claudia Lee, and villainess Mother Russia, played by body builder Olga Kurkulina.
Kick-Ass 2 is based on both the ongoing comic book series of the same name and the graphic novel Hit-Girl by Mark Millar and John Romita Jr. The film was written and directed by Jeff Wadlow, the nephew of Katie Couric. Wadlow is known for his television writing, most recently Bates Motel.
In addition to Taylor-Johnson, Chloë Grace Moretz and Christopher Mintz-Plasse will reprise their roles from the original Kick-Ass. Jim Carrey will play Colonel Stars and Stripes, who forms the team “Justice Forever,” which Kick-Ass joins on patrol. It should be noted that Carrey made the controversial move of withdrawing his support from this violent movie following the Sandy Hook massacre. Mark Millar countered Carrey’s remarks by pointing out that although the film has a high body count, it focuses on the consequences of violence. Millar admits his comics are hardcore but says they are adapted for a more mainstream audience.[youtube video=”9-Wx4WK056Q” /]
