LaMelo Ball Just Became the First High School Player to Get His Own Signature Shoe
Just when I think I’ve finally escaped LaVar Ball, he pulls me back in.
Big Baller Brand—the company LaVar launched in 2016 with his sons Lonzo, LiAngelo and LaMelo—just announced they’re releasing a signature shoe for LaMelo, who recently turned 16 years old. He’s the first high school basketball player ever to have a signature shoe.
[youtube video=”FT2DBJq-gvc”]According to SLAM, who had the exclusive announcement on the shoe, the MB1 is priced at $395 and is expected to reach homes by this holiday season. BBB claims it’s one of the lightest basketball sneakers on the market. The red heel, back upper and tongue are all made of suede material, while the knit upper is made from a two-tone woven textile.
LaMelo, a 6-foot-3 guard in the class of 2019, is currently rated as a five-star prospect by ESPN. He’s been committed to UCLA since August of 2015. He averaged 26.7 points per game for Chino Hills (California) High School last season. ESPN sports business reporter Darren Rovell has speculated that the MB1s could make LaMelo ineligible, but we’ll have to wait and see how the California Interscholastic Federation (the governing body of California high school sports) and the NCAA respond.
