Learning From the Legends
"A man has to have goals—for a day, for a lifetime—and that was mine, to have people say, 'There goes Ted Williams, the greatest hitter who ever lived.'" — Ted Williams
Walking through the hallowed halls, one is struck by the incredible accomplishments of Hall of Famers, from Joe DiMaggio hitting in 56 straight games and Ted Williams batting .406 in the 1941 season, to Hank Aaron smashing 755 home runs over the course of his steroid-free 23-year career in the Majors. But they are only a small part of the history of the game. Feats like those represent more than numbers in a stat book; they tell stories of raw talent, hard work and true dedication. Without these three components, baseball as we know it would be drastically different.
Young athletes can look to the legendary players in any sport and find inspiration. Who wouldn’t want to be the next ball player to hit over .400 or the next player to have their name etched on the Stanley Cup?
Use that thought as motivation the next time you want to blow off your training session and watch TV or play video games. Would an athlete like Williams or Aaron avoid something that could make them better? They were always improving beyond their competition, which is reflected in their record-breaking career numbers.
Dedicate yourself to your sport like the greats of baseball by committing to a goal of constant improvement.
