Casey Affleck Will Star in ‘Lewis and Clark’ Miniseries
Casey Affleck will star alongside Matthias Schoenaerts (Blood Ties) in HBO’s six-part miniseries, Lewis and Clark, about two of history’s most famous explorers. Affleck will play Meriwether Lewis with Schoenaerts will portray William Clark.
Based on Stephen E. Ambrose’s book Undaunted Courage, the series will follow the pair as they discover the American West in search of an all-water route to the Pacific. Six hourlong episodes will recreate their adventurous 1803 journey up the Missouri River to the Rocky Mountains and down the Columbia River to the Pacific Ocean.
Announcing the series, Michael Lombardo, president of HBO Programming, said, “In Lewis and Clark, we can see American idealism and the breathtaking natural beauty of the continent, as well as the complexities and tragedies of what came to be known as America’s ‘manifest destiny.’ We are tremendously excited to bring together this incredible group of talents to tell a seminal American story.”
John Curran, best known for directing The Painted Veil, will write and direct. Collaborating with Carran on the script are actor/filmmaker Edward Norton and Michelle Ashford (Masters of Sex).
Norton is also one of the project’s producers, along with Hollywood A-listers Brad Pitt, Tom Hanks and prominent filmmaker Dede Gardner (12 Years a Slave).
Affleck, last seen in the hit film Interstellar, has three other high-profile projects in the works, including the star-studded crime feature, Triple Nine, due out in September.
Lewis and Clark is expected to begin shooting this summer and premiere on HBO sometime in 2016.
