Will Lex Luthor Be in ‘Man of Steel’?
New rumors suggest that Zack Snyder’s upcoming take on Superman, Man of Steel, will include an appearance by Lex Luthor. The news shouldn’t come as much of a surprise to fans of the series. Lex and Superman go together like Batman and the Joker.
Nevertheless, everyone involved with the movie has been coy about the possibility of a Lex sighting. Actor Mackenzie Gray, who portrayed an aging Lex during the final season of the TV show Smallville, is a confirmed member of the cast, which both lends credence to the rumors and leaves room for doubt. Would we only get to experience the famed antagonist after he’s eligible for AARP membership? Or could Snyder and executive producer Christopher Nolan be throwing him in as a “tongue-in-cheek” nod to the show?
Information that has been released so far suggests that the plot will revolve around General Zod (to be portrayed by Michael Shannon). But he will not be an antagonist in the traditional sense. “He’s not a villain any more than any other general fighting to protect his people,” said Shannon during a recent interview with Total Film. “He doesn’t like to just hurt people and steal diamonds; he’s focused on being successful at his job.”
Even fans who think they’ve figured out the tone of the movie through the first trailer will be in for a surprise, according to scriptwriter David Goyer. “I’m genuinely pleased with how much secrecy we’ve been able to maintain. There’s so much of the movie that people don’t know, that hasn’t been touched upon,” said Goyer. “The trailer’s just the tiniest, tiniest tip of the iceberg.”
Here is what we do know: Man of Steel is an origin story. Snyder, Nolan and Goyer have constructed a more realistic Superman, humanizing him while adding enough action sequences to make it clear that he isn’t really human. And “hope” will be a recurring theme, as opposed to the more nihilistic take on life in Gotham.
Man of Steel will hit theaters June 14.
