Nicole Kidman and Dev Patel (Slumdog Millionaire) are set to star in the upcoming big screen drama Lion, about an Indian street kid from Calcutta (Patel) who is adopted by a couple in Australia. Eventually, after finishing college, he decides to trace his roots via Google Earth.
The story is based on Saroo Brierley’s memoir A Long Way Home. Kidman plays Patel’s adoptive mother. Some reports claim that Hugh Jackman has signed on to play the adoptive father, but Jackman’s agent denies the rumor.
The film is being produced by The Weinstein Company. Directing is Garth Davis, who recently co-directed the mystery drama mini-series Top of the Lake.
The motion picture adaptation of Brierley’s memoir was written by Luke Davies, who penned the big screen John Cusack thriller Reclaim.
Patel has been increasingly busy since his breakout role in Slumdog Millionaire back in 2008. Since then, he has been featured in many films and TV series, including The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and the just-completed Child 44.
Kidman’s latest film is the psychological thriller Before I Go to Sleep; and we can expect to see a lot of the Oscar-winning actress over the next couple of years. She has five other projects in the works, including the drama Genius, which she is currently filming with Jude Law.
Lion is due to hit theaters March 27, 2015.
