"Talent is God-given; be humble.
Fame is man-given; be thankful.
Conceit is self-given; be careful."
—Former UCLA basketball coach John Wooden

Legendary UCLA basketball coach John Wooden spoke those words to his players directly after the Bruins won their first NCAA Basketball Championship in 1964. He did not want his players to rest on their laurels or dwell on their past success.  Celebrate accomplishments, but don't forget the hard work that needs to be done in the future if you want to repeat a win.

Did his players listen? Let's just say the Bruin ballers took Coach Wooden's message to heart, consistently outworked their opponents and won nine of the next 11 NCAA championships. Incredible!

Wooden passed away on June 4, 2010, but his spirit lives on through the speeches he shared.

With the 2010-11 high school sports season about to kick off, forget about what happened last year and get ready for this one. Whether you were state champs or finished in last place, it's a fresh start to a new season; only hard work and dedication can help you write this year's record book.
