Mike Colter Says Luke Cage Netflix Series Will Be Gritty
Netflix would not be cruel enough to finally give us Luke Cage and then make him soft and cuddly, would they? Thankfully, no. It appears Netflix will skirt the PG-13 line and head straight into R-rated territory.
During a recent interview with IGN, actor Mike Colter, who will portray the superhero in the upcoming series A.K.A. Jessica Jones before heading up his own series, confirmed the show would be dark and decidedly not kid-friendly. He said, “It’s geared towards an adult audience, which is something that will be different from the Marvel Cinematic Universe you’ve seen before on the big screen. We have a more gritty, focused story on our heroes and characters that live in New York City, but it’s geared toward a more adult audience, and I think that’s the thing about the series that will be different.”
The actor, best known for playing bad guy Lemond Bishop on CBS’s critically acclaimed The Good Wife, is looking forward to the opportunity to further explore Cage’s motivations, but he also warns that fans may be in for a wait. “What I’m most excited about is touching on what makes him tick,” Colter said. “It feels good to get a character that has such a story, background and history. And when I look at the scripts, I’m really pleased with it, because it’s a slow burn; there’s nothing happening really fast that gets ahead of itself.”
A.K.A. Jessica Jones will premiere on Netflix later this year. Daredevil is the first of four Marvel-based Netflix series to arrive as a part of a forthcoming Defenders crossover miniseries; it will debut April 10.
