‘Machete Kills’ More Over the Top Than its Predecessor
The satirical action exploitation film Machete Kills is a sequel to a movie based on a fake trailer that accompanied the 2007 double feature, Grindhouse. Machete, played by Danny Trejo, is a former Mexican police detective-turned-spy who is called upon by the U.S. president (Charlie Sheen) to track arms dealer Mendez through Mexico and stop him from launching a rocket attack.
Directed by Robert Rodriguez (Sin City), Machete Kills features a number of big-name actors. In addition to Trejo and Sheen (billed as Carlos Estevez), the film also stars Demian Bichir as Mendez the Madman. Other members of the colorful cast include Mel Gibson, Sofia Vergara, Lady Gaga, Antonio Banderas, Katy Perry, Vanessa Hudgens, Alexa Vega, Zoe Saldana, and returners Michelle Rodriguez and Jessica Alba.
This is the second part of a trilogy that began with 2010’s Machete, also directed by Rodriguez. The buzz is that this satire is bigger and bolder than its predecessor. Trejo was quoted by Screen Rant as saying the movie “is going to be more over the top” than the first one. The collection of celebrities is certainly wilder and more eclectic—so much so that the supporting cast may upstage the star.”
Besides directing, Rodriguez co-wrote the movie with Marcel Rodriguez and Kyle Ward.
Machete Kills will be released in theaters Oct. 11, 2013.
