Action-Comedy ‘Mad Dogs’ in the Works with ‘Austin Powers’ Director
Prominent filmmaker Jay Roach, best known for directing the Austin Powers and Meet the Parents movies, is set to helm the upcoming action-comedy, Mad Dogs. The project is a big screen adaptation of a novel by bestselling author James Grady about three dysfunctional guys trying to escape from a government mental hospital for spies. This trio of low level U.S. intelligence workers was supposedly sent to the institution after they were judged insane, but the men believe they were actually sent to the facility because they know too much, and someone wants them dead.
Inspired by conspiracy movies of the 1970s, the filmmakers are hoping to create an action-comedy update of the popular genre—a cross between One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest and The Hangover. Interestingly, one of the most acclaimed conspiracy films of all time, Three Days of the Condor, was an adaptation of Grady’s book Six Days of the Condor.
Up and coming screenwriter Wes Jones is on board to write the script. Jones made a big splash with his comedy screenplay about young Karl Rove, entitled College Republicans, which topped the 2010 Black List. The project, currently in development, may star Daniel Radcliffe.
This won’t be the first time Roach and Jones have worked together; they are also collaborating on the new HBO political drama series called The Brink, starring Tim Robbins and Jack Black.
Producing the picture is Dan Lin, who is best known for film franchises Sherlock Holmes and The Lego Movie.
