NFL Linebacker’s Memoir Provides Inspiring Account of Battle With Cancer
What it Takes: Fighting for My Life and My Love of the Game is a new autobiography by NFL linebacker Mark Herzlich. As a junior at Boston College, Herzlich was projected to be a top-15 pick in the 2009 NFL Draft, but he shocked everyone by returning to college for a final year. Then, however, he missed his senior season after being diagnosed with a rare form of bone cancer called Ewing’s Sarcoma.
Herzlich’s book is an emotional and powerful account of how he beat the odds by not only defeating cancer but returning to the game he loves. He recounts how his family, faith and determination helped him through the process. Readers learn about the countless hours of grueling training Herzlich endured and the painful, alternative treatments that gave him a chance to survive and return to football.
In 2010, Herzlich returned to college football and started in all 13 games. He accounted for 65 tackles, four interceptions and a pair of forced fumbles during his final season at BC. In 2011, he was signed as an undrafted free agent by the New York Giants. His first start in the NFL came when the Giants faced rival Philadelphia on Nov. 20, 2011.
What it Takes spans 288 pages and is published by Penguin. It is available in both hardback and eBook form.
