Marvel Targets Writers for ‘Captain Marvel’ Movie
Marvel Entertainment is negotiating with two high-profile female screenwriters for what has been described as the studio’s first female-driven movie, Captain Marvel.
Nicole Perlman, who co-wrote the hugely popular Guardians of the Galaxy, and Meg LeFauve, best known for co-writing the much anticipated Pixar feature Inside Out, are currently in talks to collaborate on the screenplay for this comic book flick.
If the deal goes through, this will be the first time the two writers have teamed up on a script. The plan is for Perlman and LeFauve to work on the same script together rather than following the practice of double development, sometimes used by studios, in which two separate scripts are submitted, then blended together.
The heroine of this popular comic is Air Force pilot Carol Danvers. After an accident in which her DNA is fused with an alien’s, she is gifted with the superpowers of enhanced strength, flight and concussive energy projection. The character first had her own comic book in the 1970’s, titled Ms. Marvel.
Naturally, one of the things fans are most curious about is who will portray Danvers on the big screen. Producer Kevin Feige recently squashed rumors that the character makes an appearance in Avengers: Age of Ultron, telling MTV: “She was in an early version of the script, yes. We didn’t want to introduce her as this fully-formed hero, flying in a costume, before you got to know who she was, or how she came to be. . . In terms of finding the actress, it’s still very early days. It’s about finding writers right now, and we’re very close.”
Nicole Perlman has an impressive history with Marvel. In addition to Guardians of the Galaxy, she was involved in the studio’s early screenwriting program, did uncredited script doctoring on 2011’s Thor and is currently penning a Marvel comic book about Guardians character Gamora.
Captain Marvel is expected to hit theaters nationwide July 6, 2018.
