New Villains, Heroes Planned for Next ‘G.I. Joe’ Movie
Rumor has it when G.I. Joe returns to theaters, it will come with a big dose of nostalgia. According to reports, at least one member of the military unit called M.A.S.K. (for Mobile Armored Strike Kommand) will make an appearance in the next sequel.
M.A.S.K. was created in 1985 by then-Hasbro rival Kenner to compete with Joe. The company even joined forces with DC for a comic book series, but was purchased by Hasbro shortly thereafter. Film Divider reports that lead character Matt Trakker will appear in the film, but it’s not known how involved he’ll be or whether he’ll bring one of the series’ transforming cars with him. (Don’t get too excited; the cars simply transform into other cars.) It could either be a launching pad for the series’ own standalone franchise or just a nod to the past.
The site also suggests that Cobra will get a new public face—or rather, faces. Twins Tomax and Xamot, who represent the evil organization’s legal front, Extensive Enterprises, will reportedly be the main villains in the forthcoming film. The Corsica-based twosome are so tightly connected that they feel each other’s pain, communicate without words and finish each other’s sentences. And when they’re not running Cobra’s legal fronts, the former military tactical experts are leading the elite Crimson Guard.
The rumor could be accurate, because there’s a shortage of Cobra bad guys worth calling major villains. The twins achieve that delicate balance of quirky, yet deadly bad guys Paramount seems to love. Film Divider says the studio is looking to hire one actor to portray both roles.
G.I. Joe 3 is slated to hit theaters in 2016. D.J. Caruso (Disturbia, Taking Lives, Eagle Eye) was recently announced as the director.
