BioWare: ‘Mass Effect 4’ Won’t Follow ‘Dragon Age: Inquisition’ Template
With all the accolades and praise surrounding BioWare’s Dragon Age: Inquisition right, it’s easy to understand why many assume that Mass Effect 4 will be heavily influenced by the 2014 title. But according to the developer’s general manager Aaryn Flynn, though both games will use DICE’s Frostbite Engine and feature open world gameplay, there won’t be many other similarities between the titles.
“All of our games are using Frosbite now,” Flynn said on NeoGAF. “We’ve said the next Mass Effect (and our new IP, but I won’t expand on that yet) uses some of the technology from DAI. We’ve been enjoying building larger areas that you can explore with less friction, so that’ll be there as well. But after that, the next Mass Effect will be (and should be) drawing on its own rich and successful past more than what DAI would say it should do.
“We’re very proud of what DAI has achieved, but that does not set a ‘template’ for what every other game we make needs to be. Each game franchise needs to innovate and improve their experience based on what’s best for it, not just what another game had success with, because ‘well, that was successful.'”
Not much has been revealed about Mass Effect 4 thus far, but the game is expected to feature an entirely new story and may allude to Shepard and his journey.
In other news, during an earnings call last week, EA revealed that Dragon Age: Inquisition has “quickly become the most successful launch in BioWare history.” Gamers have spent more than 113 million hours playing the game since its release in November 2014.
