The Reverse Layup is a basic move that every player needs to master. No matter what level you play, it is one of the highest percentage shots in the game of basketball. Before you start trying to integrate more advanced—or showy—moves into your game, you must perfect this fundamental skill. It’s one of the easiest and most common ways to score points, and it will make you harder to guard.

How to Perform a Reverse Layup
The Reverse Layup starts with the angle of attack. You must pass underneath the rim to protect yourself from having your shot blocked. This position allows you to accurately and consistently make the layup.
The next important component is footwork that puts you in the proper layup position. You step first with the foot on the same side as the hand you’re laying up with. So when you are finishing with your right hand, you should step first with your right foot, starting at the block. Take a full stride, land on your left foot and go up for the layup.

Now to finish. There are two variations of the finish—the regular Reverse Layup and the inside hand Reverse Layup. Depending on the situation, you need to determine which variation is appropriate. The regular Reverse Layup is better when a defender is chasing you from behind. The inside hand Reverse Layup is better when a defender is coming downhill for a block.
