Major League Soccer and adidas have announced that adidas’s groundbreaking miCoach technology will be used in MLS games during the 2013 season. A small sensor worn on the players’ bodies will collect performance metrics and send them in real time to coaches on the sidelines.
This new technology piggybacks off of adidas’s original miCoach—a tiny device inserted in a player’s shoe that tracks workout output. The miCoach captures key performance metrics every second, tracking a variety of data, including time, distance, speed zones and number of sprints. What’s more, the miCoach comes with training programs created by soccer’s top athletes.
All 19 MLS clubs will have access to the new technology, allowing them to collect real-time data on acceleration, distance, field position and, for the first time, power. This critical information on game-time performance will be delivered to a coach’s iPad, graphing each player’s physical exertion and field location.
miCoach technology could make the MLS the most advanced sports league in the world. With their coaches and trainers, players can set performance goals, then track their progress toward reaching them. Although the technology is in its infancy, the effects already appear to be enormous for MLS athletes.
