Movie Night: STACK-Approved Sports Documentaries
It’s almost the weekend. You’re down for a good movie, but not in the mood for another predictable teen slasher film or a mushy romantic comedy. So why not try one of these STACK-approved sports documentaries, which are guaranteed to inspire and motivate you and your crew?
Hoop Dreams
Directed by Steve James, this film follows the lives of two African-American boys, William Gates and Arthur Agee, who struggle to become college basketball players but dream of going pro. James spent four years with Gates and Agee as they confronted the challenges of high school and grew up in the inner city; and his film is rated by many critics as the best sports documentary ever made.
Murder Ball
Directed by Henry Alex Rubin, this Academy Award-nominated film focuses on paraplegics who play full-contact rugby in Mad Max-style wheelchairs and who overcome unimaginable obstacles to compete in the Paralympic Games in Athens, Greece. Think you’re tough? You might have to reassess your inner beast after watching these warriors go at it.
More Than A Game
Directed by Kristopher Belman, this documentary follows the lives and basketball careers of young LeBron James and his teammates at St. Vincent-St. Mary High School in Akron, Ohio—the runup to LBJ’s journey to NBA fame. If you’ve never seen footage of LeBron in his teens, this excellent film will reveal why Sports Illustrated anointed him “the Chosen One.” Don’t miss it.
And remember, go light on the movie snacks. Try popcorn with light or fat-free butter, and substitute trail mix or nuts for candy. Almonds and cashews are cholesterol-free and high in healthy fats. [Learn more about good fat here.]
