Ask the Experts: How Do I Train as a Multi-Sport Athlete?
Q: How do I train as a multi-sport athlete? (Matthew Kitsis, Ill.)
A: If you’re playing more than one sport, perform exercises that lay a foundation for overall athleticism. Movements most beneficial to multi-sport athletes are compound exercises like Squats, Deadlifts and Bench Presses. In particular, Olympic lifts develop total-body strength and power, which translates to better performance on the field or court. Train three or four session per week in the off-season (if you actually have one), but dial it down to once or twice a week during the season.
