NBA Superstars LeBron James and Kevin Durant Team Up for Workout (Video)
LeBron James took his talents to South Beach, but the hustle and hard work that keep LBJ among the NBA’s elite was recently on display again in his home town of Akron, Ohio.
Yesterday morning, James tweeted a video, entitled “Striving For Greatness,” of himself and fellow NBA superstar Kevin Durant working out in the Rubber City, starting in the weight room and the indoor field turf area at the University of Akron and concluding with an on-court skills session at James’s alma mater, St. Vincent-St. Mary High School.
Many of the exercises performed by James and Durant incorporated a basketball-specific element, even in the general warm-up, for which the superstars walked on a treadmill holding lightweight med balls, putting them in positions similar to what they execute on the hardwood.
James and Durant also performed Lateral Band Walks With Shoulder Tranverse Abduction, a multipurpose exercise that helps strengthen their hips and lower body for more explosive defensive slides. The shoulder abduction—in which James extends his arms out to his sides—mimics the defensive position he assumes when guarding a player on the perimeter.
Other drills in the video include James’s Single-Leg Hip Thrust, Hanging Knee Raise, Box Step-Up (performed on a bench) and Single-Leg RDL, all of which strengthen the core and lower body—a.k.a. the speed muscles—and translate to better on-court quicks. (For another example of this type of exercise, see NFL QB Tim Tebow perform a Single-Leg Hip Thrust.)
The dynamic duo then transferred their strength gains by applying them to their field work, which combined multidirectional speed and agility training with a conditioning element.
The skills session involved dribbling and ball handling drills, one of which required James to stack cones with one hand while dribbling a basketball with the other, which helps sharpen his focus for better on-court vision.
Watching the video of this pair of world-class athletes training through the extended NBA lockout shows that no matter how great your ability, the sky is the limit when it comes to improving your performance. And this was only Episode 1.
