New Wii U 'The Legend of Zelda' Footage Unveiled

Get your first look at in-game footage of 'The Legend of Zelda' for the Wii U.

At E3 on Tuesday, Nintendo revealed details and visuals for a new The Legend of Zelda game coming to the Wii U. The trailer features producer Eiji Aonuma describing the new game, while footage of Link and his horse rolls in the background. The footage is crisp and colorful, with tall blades of glass blowing in the wind and huge mountains looming on the horizon.

The peaceful scene gets disrupted by a laser-firing monster that chases Link and his horse to a bridge. Link unveils a powerful bow and explosive arrows during his battle with the beast, and the trailer cuts out as he charges up a finishing shot.

The art style seems to be a continuation of Skyward Sword for the Wii, but Nintendo has promised that the new game will also draw inspiration from the franchise's early history, specifically the open-world gameplay established by the very first entry in the series. Players will be able to tackle any region of Hyrule they want in any order they choose. Auonuma credits the strength of the Wii U's hardware for allowing the series to offer open-world gameplay.

The last two installments in the series, 2011's Skyward Sword for Wii and 2013's A Link Between Worlds for the Nintendo DS, both received strong reviews, scoring 93 and 91 out of 100 respectively on the aggregate site Metacritic.

The Legend of Zelda is scheduled to hit the Wii U sometime in 2015.
