Gaming Update: ‘NHL 14,’ ‘Mario 3D’ and ‘Madden 25’
Learn the good and not-so-good news for Wii U owners in this week’s Gaming Update.
Madden 25 and NHL 14 Skipping Wii U Release
Electronic Arts has announced that it will not release Wii U versions of Madden 25 and NHL 14. This marks the first time since 1991 that Madden will not be playable on Nintendo. The news shouldn’t come as much of a surprise. The console has struggled to win over consumers since its launch. Despite the scratch, EA insists that they have a “strong partnership” with Nintendo. Madden 25 will be released on Aug. 27 for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, while NHL 14 hits shelves Sept. 10. No word yet on whether EA’s highly anticipated FIFA 14 will also skip the Wii U.
In related news, Crysis 3, Aliens: Colonial Marines and Battlefield 4 have also opted out of the Wii U.
Mario 3D Coming This Fall
In desperate need of some good news, Nintendo announced plans to release the long-awaited Mario 3D for Wii U no later than October. A playable version of the game will be available at the E3 conference, where Wii U Mario Kart and Super Smash Bros. games will also appear. But gamers will have to wait a little longer for Pikmin 3, The Wonderful 101, Wii Fit U and The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD.
In other news, the Virtual Console launch at the end of April brought along a few games: Balloon Fight, Donkey Kong Jr., ExciteBike, Ice Climbers, Kirby’s Adventure, Punch Out, F-Zero and Super Mario World.
“From July onward, we will launch a succession of Wii U titles and we will promote these extensively until the end of the year,” promised Shelly Pearce, PR director at Nintendo UK.
