Summer Movie Checklist: June Edition
Need a break from all the summer blockbusters? Try one of these smaller films.
Night Moves
[youtube video=”HybtMP_RW4g” /]Kick off your summer movie viewing with some suspense. In Kelly Reichardt’s thriller, three radical environmentalists (Jesse Eisenberg as an organic farmer, Dakota Fanning as a former high society girl and Peter Sarsgaard as an ex-Marine) seek to grab headlines by sabotaging a controversy-laden hydroelectric dam. As they execute their plot, things start to unravel in a “journey of doubt, paranoia and unintended consequences.”
Why It’s a Safe Bet: Jesse Eisenberg, Dakota Fanning, and Peter Sarsgaard.
Bonus Features: Set in breathtaking Oregon, sans sparkling teenage vampires.
Release Date: May 30
We Are the Best! Vi är bäst! (original title)
[youtube video=”R33H0ONZcSY” /]This small heartwarmer is a sure antidote to the summer’s loud monsters and giant robots. In We Are the Best! three misfit teenage girls give their all to form a punk band—despite having no musical talent or even instruments. As the teens fight for their dream, everyone tells them that punk is dead. Set in the 80’s and billed as “Three Girls vs. the World,” this Swedish film from Lukas Moodysson is an adaptation of his wife Coco’s graphic novel.
Why It’s a Safe Bet: Lukas Moodysson’s solid track record, the irresistable marriage of teenage misfit rebellion/coming of age and the 80’s.
Bonus Features: Punk is not dead.
Release Date: May 30
The Rover
[youtube video=”ChM2icbWo9w” /]Set in post-apocalyptic Australia a decade after a global economic meltdown, The Rover stars Guy Pearce as a gritty ex-soldier whose car is stolen. The thieves leave behind a wounded young man, played by Robert Pattinson, who helps Pearce track down his car through the barren outback.
Why It’s a Safe Bet: David Michod’s anticipated follow-up to Animal Kingdom.
Bonus Features: Conceived as a story David Michod collaborated on with Joel Edgerton.
Release Date: June 20
Snowpiercer
[youtube video=”vcGdmh0_toY” /]In Snowpiercer, a global warming experiment gone wrong has killed most of humanity. The only people left on earth live on the Snowpiercer, a train driven by a perpetual motion engine that circles the globe. Based on the French graphic novel Le Transperceneige, Snowpiercer tells the story of a revolution against the train’s rigid class system.
Why It’s a Safe Bet: Director Bong Joon-ho also helmed The Host, which was the highest-grossing film in Korea for many years. Snowpiercer boasts an impressive cast, including Chris Evans, Song Kang-ho, Ed Harris, John Hurt, Tilda Swinton, Jamie Bell and Octavia Spencer.
Bonus Features: See Chris Evans in a moody, paced film after The Avengers and Captain America.
Release Date: June 27
