Nike Introduces the 2013 Black History Month Collection
Nike has unveiled their 2013 Black History Month Collection. The slogan for the special edition is “Be Bold. Be True.”
The collection consists of seven shoes, including unique versions of the KD V, LeBron X and Kobe 8 System; two T-shirts; a Destroyer Jacket; Nike Elite socks and a five-panel hat. Each item features the same color palette: black and grey with orange highlights.
The inspirations behind this year’s line are soccer player Didier Drogba, tennis player Serena Williams and basketball star Kevin Durant. According to Nike, these athletes were selected for accomplishments in their respective sports and for their commitments to service and philanthropy.
Drogba has been a force in the movement to bring solar light bulbs to poverty-stricken areas of Africa; Williams contributed to building a secondary school in Kenya; and Durant has continued to support his hometown recreation center. Each athlete has an individual logo in the collection: a light bulb combined with soccer ball for Drogba; a tennis ball with lightning bolts shooting forth for Williams; and a basketball hoop merging into a cloud for Durant.
The Black History Month collection will land in stores this Saturday, but Bryant and Durant debuted their shoes during their games on Martin Luther King Day in tribute to the slain civil rights leader. Nike will again give a portion of its sales revenue to Big Brothers Big Sisters of America as a part of its continued support of organizations that help youth.
