Nintendo Confirms New Gaming System in the Works
Nintendo has confirmed they are working on a new gaming system. The project, under the codename “NX,” is still in the early stages, said the company’s president Satoru Iwata during a recent press conference.
“As proof that Nintendo maintains strong enthusiasm for the dedicated game system business, let me confirm that Nintendo is currently developing a dedicated game platform with a brand-new concept under the development codename ‘NX,'” Iwata said. “It is too early to elaborate on the details of this project, but we hope to share more information with you next year.”
It’s unclear whether the gaming system will be in console form or be shaped around the company’s upcoming rumored foray into mobile gaming. But it will apparently arrive alongside a new membership service, which will set itself apart from Club Nintendo by extending across multiple platforms.
“Nintendo will be the primary party to operate this new membership service,” Iwata said. “Unlike the Club Nintendo membership service that Nintendo has been operating, the new membership service will include multiple devices and create a connection between Nintendo and each individual consumer regardless of the device the consumer uses.”
One thing is for sure, however. Whatever you think the company will do, think bigger and expect to be surprised. “If you only expand upon existing hardware, it’s dull,” said Iwata, making it clear that the company wouldn’t be following in its competitors’ footsteps. “In some shape or form, we’re always thinking about how we want to surprise players as well as our desire to change each person’s video gaming life.”
