Olympic Runner Blames Failed Drug Test on Burrito
Shelby Houlihan, who holds the American record for 1,500 and 5,000 meters, with her sights set on competing in the upcoming Summer Games in Tokyo shared publicly she’d received a four-year ban from the sport after testing positive for an anabolic steroid.
But Houlihan denies knowingly taking any banned substance or performance-enhancing drug. Instead, she shared on Instagram Monday her positive test must be from a tainted pork burrito:
“I want to be very clear. I have never taken any performance-enhancing substances. And that includes that of which I am being accused,” Houlihan wrote.
Houlihan says she received a provisional ban from the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) because of a positive test for Nandrolone. According to the athlete, it’s a steroid that pigs produce in high amounts naturally.
The 28-year-old Oregon resident says she consumed a burrito from a food truck hours before her drug test and submitted an appeal with this rationale to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).
She even passed a polygraph and submitted a hair sample for toxicology testing, according to CBS News.
But the CAS upheld the AIU’s charge against Houlihan of a four-year ban:
The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has upheld the AIU’s charge and banned Shelby Houlihan of the USA for 4 years, starting 14 Jan 2021, for the Presence of a Nandrolone metabolite, a violation of @WorldAthletics Anti-Doping Rules.
