Overcoming Adversity: Longhorns’ Alex Silver is Beating Cancer
Many high school athletes face adversity every day. For some, it mean stress from balancing academics with athletics. For others, it means exhaustion from working after school to help pay the family bills. Regardless of where you fit in, you’ve probably reached a point where you’ve thought about either sacrificing something important in your life or giving up sports altogether.
Thanks to Lance Armstrong, STACK came across a story chock full of inspiration for young athletes everywhere.

Great example of a young adult kicking cancer’s [butt]. @Texas_Baseball player Alex Silver http://bit.ly/egD6vZ #NYACAW
Alex Silver plays baseball for the University of Texas. At the start of the spring semester, he was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma, and he ended up missing the first half of the season to undergo chemotherapy treatments.
“I tried to stay as strong as possible,” Silver said. “I worked out a little bit, did as much as I could on the field, just tried to stay as strong as I could. But there were days after chemotherapy where I just needed to lay in bed. I just needed to rest. I’d wake up, go to class, and after class I was drained for the whole entire day. It was just a day by day process.”
But Silver didn’t let that stop him. He continued to persevere, and yesterday he finally made it back onto the field—as a pinch hitter in the top of the eighth.
STACK athletes can use this story as motivation to stay upbeat no matter what obstacles are thrown their way. We encourage you to follow Silver’s progress as he builds up strength and and makes it back to the Longhorns’ starting lineup.
