Sir Paul McCartney and Nirvana Release New Single
Good news for music lovers everywhere: Sir Paul McCartney and the surviving members of Nirvana have recorded a song together. The legendary Beatle took the stage and played the Concert for Sandy with Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic, and Pat Smear, debuting a new song called “Cut Me Some Slack.” Now that the “Sirvana” song (as some are already calling the collaboration) is available—not just as a live cut, but also as a studio version—it is the lead track to Grohl’s Sound City soundtrack.
The song, which combines a strong Nirvana vibe with the heavier side of the Beatles (think “Helter Skelter”) and some bluesy slide guitar, apparently came about when Grohl rang up McCartney and invited him to jam with some friends of his. Initially, McCartney thought he would be jamming with Grohl and some random musicians, but he found himself in the middle of a partial Nirvana reunion. “I didn’t really know who they were,” said McCartney. “They are saying how good it is to be back together. I said, ‘Whoa? You guys haven’t played together for all that time?’ And somebody whispered to me, ‘That’s Nirvana. You’re Kurt.’ I couldn’t believe it.”
The initial reception to the news that the remaining members of Nirvana would play the benefit with McCartney fronting the band was mixed. Some fans were delighted to see the three get back together, even for one show, while others, including Kurt Cobain’s widow, Courtney Love, were rather vehement in their criticism of the move, citing Cobain’s place as the lead singer and main songwriter for the band. Still, once the band took the stage after the introduction by Sir Paul, the result was something remarkable. Sir Paul meshed well with the band and did some interesting slide guitar work on his cigar box guitar, against a track that would have fit in well on The White Album.
There’s no word yet on further collaboration between McCartney, Grohl, Novoselic, and Smear; and because of disputes with Love over the Nirvana name and intellectual property, it’s doubtful that any future work would have anything to do with Nirvana.
The soundtrack to Sound City, entitled Sound City: Real to Reel, will be released to the public on March 12, but “Cut Me Some Slack” is available on iTunes now.
