Paul Rabil: Refining Perfection
One way to dominate a sport is to perfect the little things. Wrist control, hand-eye coordination, reaction time—they all all add up to help create a franchise athlete. And in the world of the lacrosse, nobody’s worked harder to perfect his game in recent years than Paul Rabil.
The four-time All-American from Johns Hopkins University has been double-dipping in the pro lacrosse circuit, and he’s showing no signs of slowing down. Playing for the Boston Cannons of the MLL [Major League Lacrosse] during the summer, #99 is known for his monster athleticism and freakishly fast shooting [he won the ’09 MLL Fastest Shot Comp with a 111-mph fastball]. Then, once the MLL season is over, Rabil hits the indoor winter circuit with the Washington Stealth of the National Lacrosse League [NLL].
Yet, Rabil still trains for perfection throughout both seasons. The indoor league is different from field lacrosse, forcing him to adapt his style of play. “I like to use my athleticism to open up space in field lacrosse,” Rabil says. “In the NLL, space is limited; therefore, I was called on to utilize different parts of athleticism that I had yet to pull on. I worked a lot on my hand-eye coordination and ability to shoot and pass with someone carving away at [my] wrists.”
STACK spent an entire day with the All-Star midfielder, discovering the secrets of his training success. It starts with a total body lifting routine and finishes with perfecting his shot accuracy and developing speed and agility.
As long as Rabil has good teammates around him and stays on top of his training, his career longevity is assured. Expect to see #99 ripping off high speed shots long into the next decade.
