Perfect Your Arm Drive to Improve Your Hockey Skating Speed
The Arm Drive Drill focuses upon developing an optimal and efficient arm path and hockey stick path when skating forward. The drill is similar to that used by short track sprinters, where the key to success is using the arms to initiate and lead the legs.
Begin in a stationary V Stance position, shin pads pushed forward against the tongues of the skate boots and hips back in a deep, half squat position. With the core engaged and the back in neutral posture, drive the arms in a linear path. After approximately 4-6 arm drives, accelerate quickly into forward skating.
To progress this exercise, close your eyes while in the stationary V Stance position. Drive the arms and hockey stick in a linear path, and when a coach or partner blows a whistle or commands you to go, open your eyes and accelerate into forward skating as explosively as possible.
In the next progression of this drill, receive a pass down ice while skating forward and finish with a rapid shot on net.
