Cyclist Peter Sagan Remains Humble and Hungry
He’s only 22, but professional cyclist Peter Sagan has already racked up some prestigious victories. Considered one of road racing’s most promising young riders, Sagan recorded stage wins during the 2012 season and qualified for a green jersey point classification in the Tour de France. STACK caught up with Sagan while he was training overseas to get his insights on his fast track pace to racing stardom.
STACK: Liquigas-Cannondale is now Cannondale Pro Cycling. Are you excited for the change?
Sagan: The entire team is getting ready for great things from Cannondale Pro Cycling in the 2013 season. I feel strong enthusiasm from the team for a great year. Cycling is my passion, as is the opportunity to put on a show. I want to give our fans a strong performance on the saddle of my SuperSix EVO.
STACK: Your coming-out party was the Tour of California, where you won five of the eight stages. Now that you’re recognized as one of the sport’s elite athletes, do you race differently knowing that other riders are gunning for you?
Sagan: Do I think I’m a star? Not yet.
STACK: You’re coming off an outstanding season where you won 16 total races, including three stages at the Tour de France. At 22, did you think you would be this good this quick?
Sagan: This past season was incredible, but I know I have a lot of work still to do, and I am looking forward to this coming season.
STACK: What are your expectations for the 2013 season?
Sagan: I am very excited for the upcoming season. 2013 started with the launch of Cannondale Pro Cycling in California. My goals are to continue to improve and to be at the front of all races. I am looking forward to races such as the AMGEN Tour of California and to possibly win another green jersey at the Tour de France.
STACK: How did you keep in shape during the off-season?
Sagan: In November I rode a little, more mountain biking than road actually. I made sure I didn’t ride too many kilos and made sure to follow the right diet. I also mixed biking and different forms of training at the gym.
