This Workout Will Make You a Better Point Guard
On the court, a point guard is essentially an extension of the head coach. Good point guards can read opposing defenses, get the offense into the right play, set up their teammates, knock down open shots and use ball screens to create advantages for their team.
The following hour-long point guard workout will help you become more efficient in your position. You can perform it by yourself or with a teammate. (If you’re unable to get a partner, use a wall for the Combo Move Partner Passing Drill.)
Coaching Points
- Keep eyes up on all dribbling drills
- Visualize the defense on the ball screen drills
- Push yourself and don’t be afraid to mess up
Point Guard Workout
- Warm up Dynamic Stretch x 5 min
- In the Box Basketball Dribbling Drill x 2 min
- Bust Out & Retreat Basketball Dribbling Drill 2 x 1 min
- 2-Minute Combo Move Weak Hand Finish Drill x 1 set
- Step Back Crossover to a Floater Finish Drill 3 x 6 makes (spots are the wing, top of key, and opposite wing)
- Ball Screen Turn the Corner 2 x 5 shots (1 set from each wing)
- Ball Screen Pull-Up Jump Shot 2 x 5 shots (1 set from each wing)
- Ball Screen Refusal 2 x 5 shots (1 set from each wing)
- Feeding the Post Passing Drill 2 x 8 reps
- Combo Move Partner Passing Drill 2 x 1 min
- Static Stretch x 5-10 min
