A remake of the classic 1980's horror film Poltergeist is in the works. This new version is a contemporary reimagining of the story about the Bowen family, whose new home is penetrated by angry spirits, leading to the abduction of the youngest daughter, Madison, whom the other family members are determined to rescue.
Filmmakers have been eager to reboot this popular movie series for a long time, which isn't surprising considering that the original flick was one of the highest grossing horror movies of all time. While there are some notable changes, like the memorable character of the psychic Tangina being replaced by a group of new experts, the plotline of this picture remains similar to the 1982 film.
Starring as husband and father Eric Bowen is actor Sam Rockwell, best known for Cowboys & Aliens. Wife and mother Amy Bowen is played by Rosemarie DeWitt (The Odd Life of Timothy Green). Madison is portrayed by accomplished child actor Kennedi Clements (Jingle All the Way 2). The film also stars Jared Harris (Lincoln), Nicholas Braun (The Perks of Being a Wallflower) and Saxon Sharbino of the TV series Touch.
The movie is being produced by the famed Sam Raimi. Known as an innovative filmmaker, Raimi has a long list of impressive credits, including major franchises such as Spider-Man and Evil Dead.
Directing the film is Gil Kenan, best known for the animated comedy feature Monster House. The screenplay was written by David Lindsay-Abaire, who previously worked with Raimi on the 2013 hit, Oz the Great and Powerful.
Poltergeist will invade theaters nationwide July 24.
