Prepping for the Court
Face it. If you dream of becoming an elite baller on the hardwood, you have to play the game year-round. The team’s season ends, but yours doesn’t. However, you can’t spend all your time on the court. Neglecting your weight training could keep you from reaching your basketball potential.
Since you don’t want college coaches skipping over your name at recruiting time, it’s important to understand how year-round training will greatly increase your skill level on the court.
We spoke with Elite Performance Professional Shawn Dassie and two NBA stars to get their thoughts on the importance of training.
Shawn Dassie, Elite Performance Professional, has worked with four NBA first-round selections
“Take the time to prepare to play. Far too many young players spend too much time on the court. I wouldn’t say too much time, but they don’t do any prep work, [which is] necessary to really make sure that they’re performing at an absolute peak during those most important games and most important tournaments in-season.”
David West, New Orleans Hornets, Forward
“Once I got to college and fairly got a taste of what it was like playing against a 20-year-old, when I was 18, or a 22-year-old, [I understood] the need for training and preparation. When it comes to my training, I try to keep it as college-like as possible. I felt that was where I got the bulk of training in terms of learning what to do, learning how to work [and] work hard. There’s always a need for weight training.”
Tyson Chandler, New Orleans Hornets, Center
“I really didn’t understand the importance of training. I did it because I realized it was making me better. But I didn’t realize how important it was to keep [myself] in shape, how important it was for the body. I kind of have learned that later on in my career. I wish I would have known it a lot earlier, because I would have focused in a little more and took it a little more serious.”
If you want to play good, you’ve got to look good. Get everything you need for the hardwood, including basketball shoes and basketball clothing.
