According to reports, Sony will unveil its long-awaited virtual reality headset at the Game Developers Conference this month. It’s not the first time Sony has been rumored to be introducing the product—it seems that gossip leaks in conjunction with every major technology event—but this may finally be the conference where we get some hard news. The company recently went through the trouble of securing patents for the future product, and they may be preparing to make an announcement now to divert attention from the Oculus Rift VR headset just as it’s about to hit shelves.

Regarding the quality of Sony’s rumored VR headset, TechRadar recently cited an unidentified source, who said, “The quality and resolution are really, really good. People will definitely be impressed with what Sony’s built.” As for why the product has taken so long to reach the market, the source added, “Sony has deliberately taken its time to tweak and polish the headset before revealing it.”

Further fueling the rumors: a recent statement by John Smedley, president of Sony Online Entertainment. In an interview on Reddit about the game EverQuest Next, he was asked about alternatives to Oculus Rift. He answered, “Hearing good things about two competitors . . . one of which actually comes from Sony.”

Oculus VR is currently focusing its product on PC games, so Sony’s VR headset could get a considerable leg up as a viable option for console gamers, unless Microsoft suddenly joins the race. Last year, documents leaked suggesting MS is working on technology similar to the Google Glass. Called “Fortaleza,” it is expected to be released this year and will support the ability to connect via Wi-Fi and 4G. We haven’t heard much about it lately, but don’t count Microsoft out just yet.
