You’ll Never Believe What NFL Teams Ask Prospects During Their Combine Interviews
The NFL Combine kicks off this week, meaning hundreds of NFL prospects will spend the majority of their time in Indianapolis having every inch of their bodies studied and getting peppered with weird questions by representatives of the teams interested in adding them to their rosters in 2016.
In recent years, fans have learned about some of these strange questions, because during post-Combine interviews, players have revealed the most head-scratching inquiries they received from team officials. But nothing compares to what former defensive end Austen Lane was asked back in 2010.
Lane, who retired from the NFL in 2015 after playing only five seasons, spent the morning on Twitter sharing some of the things he was asked during his time in Indy; they range from strange to borderline uncomfortable. Here’s the list:
When a scout at the combine asked me… “If you could kill someone and not get caught, would you?” pic.twitter.com/mwK5UX8gvW

When a coach made the statement during my combine interview… “I see you have dreads, you smoke weed don’t you?” pic.twitter.com/fu2BLm55uF

When a scout asked me at the combine if I had to murder someone: Would I use a gun or a knife? pic.twitter.com/R5BHMxiDM7

Murder? Stereotyping drug use because of his hairstyle? Asking if he was attracted to his own mother? Wait. What?
We know that some people, who have more insight into the human condition than we do (maybe), could consider these questions and make sense of the responses; but we here at STACK fail to see how any of the questions—or Lane’s answers to them—reveal anything about how he would perform on the field.
Let’s hope none of these questions were asked by the Jaguars, who ended up drafting Lane, because that could have led to some awkward interactions in the locker room.
“Hey, Lane, I know we asked you what type of murder weapon you prefer, hypothetically, but let’s forget that ever happened and just go out there and play football, OK? Great.”
